Director's Welcome Letter
Welcome!

As the Director, it is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the School of Film and Photography (SFP, formerly the Department of Media and Theatre Arts) at Montana State University!

This is a unique and wonderful place to study and practice the arts of film and video production, photography and theatre. Our goal is to provide a positive and challenging environment for educating men and women who desire to become artists and professionals in film, photography, television, theatre and video. The department works to promote friendly and supportive relationships between students, faculty and staff, while maintaining high professional and academic standards. Our graduates pursue successful careers in their chosen area of specialization throughout the United States. We keep close contact with our graduates including a strong alumni community of professionals working in Los Angeles.

The School of Film and Photography offers several distinct advantages for students. The study option in Motion Picture Production (MPVT) is one of the few in the nation offering a full curriculum in film that is supported by courses in stage acting, design and directing. The Photography program, offering a major as well as a minor for non-SFP majors, is unique in a five-state area.

The School of Film and Photography also offers a unique MFA program in Science and Natural History Filmmaking. This one-of-a-kind program invites graduates with science backgrounds who are interested in exploring the potential of film for scientific investigation and public outreach.

The School of Film and Photography is located in The Visual Communications Building, offering state-of-the-art laboratories, studios and equipment. Our building also houses the Black Box Theater, built in 2007, which has complete scene and paint shops as well as a costume department. We are also home to the renowned Shakespeare in the Parks, a professional theatre company, which performs live stage productions throughout Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho each summer, and to KUSM Montana Public Television, which offers students opportunities to work in a professional television studio.

Again, welcome to MSU and the School of Film & Photography.

Sincerely,
